Mini Outdoor Survival Lessons at Rose’s Retreat!
Survivalist fire-making, edible plants, basic survival skills, tracking, medicinal plants, & much more!
Instructed by David Rose
David Rose is a National Board Certified high school teacher. He has been formally trained at The Tom Brown Wilderness Tracker School. His expertise in practical outdoor skills comes from a lifetime of personal experience, including his many years in the scouting program. David is an Eagle Scout in the Boy Scout of America organization.
Beyond the basic wilderness survival skills, he has highly developed skills in primitive archery, Native American living skills, and bird identification.
David is also a martial arts instructor, having attained a 4th degree black belt in the Japanese self-defense art of Aikido. His interests and experience includes Japanese calligraphy and Zen mediation. He speaks Spanish and French. He is also an expert woodworker.

Available Lessons:
1.
Survival basics - Lost? In this Lesson the core concepts of nature appreciation and wilderness survival are introduced. This lesson focuses on the survivalists attitude and the sacred order of survival: shelter, fire, water, and food.
2. Dangers! - Is that poisonous? Learn what is dangerous in your environment and how to protect yourself from them, including plants, insects, and animals.
3. Wild plant identification - It’s all just green to me! This lesson focuses on wildflowers and the essential skills involved in plant identification. Students will be given core skills and then be required to use those skills to accurately identify a variety of wild plants.
4. The trees - The world’s first hardware store. Learn how to identify different trees and the characteristics and uses of those trees
5. Edible plants - Hungry? One of the most basic food supplies that people take for granted are plants. “Weeds” are everywhere and yet most of them to the trained eye are rich food supply. Learn how to identify some key edible plants in the area, as well as how to prepare them. Students will harvest, prepare, and sample many wild edibles.
6. Fire - Can’t get a camp fire started? This unit teaches the basics of fire. Topics to be covered include Safety, proper fire construction, the essential ingredients and the techniques necessary to start and maintain a fire in all weather conditions.
7. Friction fire - Forgotten your matches? This Unit teaches the essentials of fire without matches. The technique to be taught is called The Bow drill. The instructor will supply Bow drill kits for students to use. Additional kits can be purchased at the camp store.
8. Finding direction - Which way do I go? Getting lost in the woods can be a scary experience. Here I will explain why people get lost in the woods and techniques involved in finding yourself again. Compass instruction can be included or can be a separate lesson.
9. Rope and Knots - Knot keeps slipping? Learn about how to effectively use a variety of knots and their many uses. Also learn about rope and its uses.
10. Shelter - Forget your tent? Learn to basics of survival shelter. Learn how to identify a good shelter location and how to construct a good all weather shelter that will keep you alive in any weather condition.
11. Water - Thirsty? Learn how to find and purify water in a survival or back woods situations.
12. Animals - What is that? Learn how to identify different animals, their tracks, habitats and behaviors in this class.
13. How to identify birds - Did you hear that? Learn how to identify birds by their Markings, songs and behaviors and what their songs may be telling us about what is going on in the landscape.
14. Tracking - What made that track? Learn the basic skills needed to begin learning how to follow animal and human tracks.
15. Self defense - Let go of me! Introductory self defense. How to escape from any grabbing attack and more basic self defense techniques.
